A stopped or unreliable wall clock does not always mean the entire clock needs to be discarded. Start with the simple checks

Remove the battery before inspecting the clock. Fit a fresh battery of the correct type and confirm that its positive and negative ends match the markings in the compartment. If the contacts look dusty or lightly oxidized, clean them gently with a dry cloth or a soft eraser. Do not use excessive liquid around the electrical components.

Look at the hands from the side. The hour, minute and second hands should be parallel to the dial and must not touch one another, the dial, the glass or raised hour markers. Even slight contact can stop a low-torque movement or make the clock lose time.

Check the hand installation

If the clock stopped after the hands were removed or replaced, reinstall them in the correct order. Set the hour and minute hands to 12 o'clock before fitting the second hand. Rotate the hands through a full cycle manually and check for rubbing or bending. Never force a hand onto an incompatible shaft.
