Which material should you choose for quartz clock hands?
Choose clock hands by the complete design: material, dimensions, finished weight, shaft fitting and the movement they will operate with. Aluminum and ABS plastic are both options, but neither material name proves that a particular hand set will fit or run correctly on your movement. Compare the actual parts and approve a working sample before placing a bulk order.
For buyers developing a wall clock, replacing a hand set or preparing a private-label range, a useful comparison begins with the same drawing and operating requirements. Otherwise, a quotation for one shape and thickness can be mistaken for an equivalent quotation for a different design.
Material and thickness options in the technical notes
Heng-Rong's supplementary technical notes dated August 12, 2026 list stamped aluminum hands and injection-molded ABS plastic hands. The table below summarizes that product-family information. It does not mean every thickness is available for every design, or that an individual product described simply as plastic has a confirmed ABS composition. Ask for the exact model specification.
| Item | Aluminum hands | ABS plastic hands |
|---|---|---|
| Material recorded | Aluminum | ABS plastic |
| Process recorded | Stamping | Injection molding |
| Listed thicknesses | 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.0 mm | 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 mm |
| Finished weight | Depends on the particular length and design; request the actual value | Depends on the particular length and design; request the actual value |
Use these entries to frame your enquiry, not as permission to substitute one part for another. They are not durability ratings, load limits or current stock commitments. The notes do not provide a universal weight for either material family.
1. Compare dimensions before comparing weight
Record the hour and minute hands separately, and include the second hand when required. Mark the distance from the fitting-hole center to the tip, the tail length, the widest section and the thickness. This makes the design easier to identify than a description such as "large black hands."
The clock-hand measurement information on this product page uses the fitting hole as the reference for length. For a purchase drawing, label the center-to-tip measurement explicitly and show the overall length separately where a tail is present.
Ask for the mass of the finished hand, including any fitted sleeve or other attached component. Material and thickness alone do not determine the weight of a finished shape. Do not assume that all plastic hands are lighter than all aluminum hands, or that a thicker option is automatically the better choice.
2. Confirm the movement and fitting as a separate decision
Changing material does not settle shaft compatibility. Send the movement model and fitting drawing with the hand enquiry. Specify the hole shape, relevant dimensions and attachment arrangement for each hand. A similar outline or matching color is not evidence of a compatible fitting.
If the existing clock works correctly and you want a different appearance, retain its known movement and mounting requirements as reference information. Ask the supplier to compare the proposed replacement against those requirements rather than choosing by a photograph alone.
For a new clock design, evaluate the hands and movement together. Include the intended installation orientation and ask the movement supplier to confirm the proposed hand load. A label such as high torque still needs a model-specific compatibility check; it is not a promise to drive any large hand set.
3. Check appearance on the actual dial
Compare sample hands against the intended dial, markings and cover. Record the requested color and finish clearly, preferably with an agreed physical reference. A screen image is useful for discussing a style but does not replace sample approval for the final appearance.
Check readability at the distance expected in use. Include the hour hand, minute hand and second hand in the review so the complete set looks consistent. If you are comparing two materials, use comparable shapes and finishes wherever possible; otherwise several design changes are being assessed at once.
Avoid assuming that a material category establishes scratch resistance, outdoor suitability or service life. If the application has environmental or appearance requirements, include them in the enquiry and request supporting information for the proposed part.
4. Approve clearance and operation on a sample
Assemble the sample using the intended movement, dial and cover. Check clearance between the hands, between the hands and dial, and beneath the cover. Confirm that the mounting arrangement positions the hands correctly and that their paths do not interfere.
Use the movement manufacturer's installation and time-setting instructions when checking the assembly. Agree an operating check appropriate to the finished clock and record the conditions and results. Merely seeing the hands move at installation does not replace an agreed sample evaluation.
If a sample fails, record the symptom and the exact components involved before changing the specification. Substituting a material without identifying an incorrect fitting, clearance problem or unsuitable load can leave the original issue unresolved.
5. Make quotations comparable
Send each supplier the same drawing revision, required quantity, fitting details and appearance requirements. Ask whether the proposal uses an existing design or requires a new one. Confirm sample arrangements, packaging, delivery timing and any tooling charges in the quotation for that project.
Do not transfer a minimum order quantity or delivery estimate from an unrelated hand model. Keep the approved sample, drawing and quotation linked so that a later reorder refers to the same part rather than only the same material description.
Buyer enquiry checklist
- Movement model and shaft-fitting specification.
- Separate drawings or dimensions for each required hand.
- Requested material and thickness, with acceptable alternatives identified.
- Finished weight and any sleeve or attached component.
- Color, finish and appearance reference.
- Dial and cover clearance, installation orientation and sample checks.
- Order quantity, packaging requirements and delivery destination.
Browse the Heng-Rong clock hands range, then send the exact product link and project requirements through the enquiry page. Model-specific confirmation should come before sample approval and bulk ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Are ABS plastic hands always lighter?
No universal comparison is possible from the material name alone. Compare the finished weight of the actual shapes, dimensions and fittings being quoted.
Can aluminum hands replace plastic hands directly?
Only after confirming fitting, dimensions, clearance and movement suitability. Material substitution by itself does not establish interchangeability.
Does the thickness table apply to every model?
No. It summarizes family-level technical notes. Confirm the available thickness and material for the specific model or custom design.
