What measurements do you need before buying a clock insert?
Before ordering a clock insert, identify the exact model and confirm three separate dimensions: the visible front size, the required mounting opening and the space needed behind the mounting surface. Also confirm how the insert is retained and how the battery and setting controls will remain accessible. A single diameter in a product title is not enough to approve a production drawing.

1. Separate the bezel size from the mounting opening
The front bezel is the visible surround of the clock face. The part that enters the housing may have a different size and shape. Record both dimensions separately. Do not assume that an insert described by its front diameter needs a hole of the same diameter.
For a replacement project, remove the old insert only by the method appropriate to its retaining arrangement. Measure the existing opening as well as the removed component. A photograph of the front helps identify appearance, but a rear view and side view are needed to discuss the mounting structure.
For a new design, start with a candidate insert and obtain its mounting drawing before fixing the opening size. Designing the housing around a photograph or a catalogue title leaves important dimensions undefined.

2. Define where each depth measurement starts
Overall thickness and installation depth are different descriptions. A thickness measured from the front face can include parts that remain outside the housing. A recess measurement starts at a different reference surface. Ask the supplier to mark the starting and ending points on a side-view drawing instead of relying on the word "depth" alone.
Measure the available space inside the finished housing. Include a rear cover, internal supports or other components that occupy that space. Confirm the battery position and the room needed to reach the time-setting control. A component can appear to fit while leaving no practical way to service it.
If the insert must be removed to replace the battery, check the removal method during sample approval. The finished product should have a documented assembly and service procedure appropriate to that specific insert.
3. Check the finished housing and retaining arrangement
Record the housing material, wall thickness around the opening and any coating or lining inside it. Measure the finished opening rather than only the tool or unfinished part used to make it. Tell the supplier whether the opening has already been manufactured or can still be changed.
For a circular opening, take measurements in more than one direction to identify an opening that is not round. Record any taper or stepped recess visible in the housing. For non-circular inserts, provide width, height and corner details instead of converting everything to one approximate diameter.
Ask which retaining components belong to the quoted model and whether they are included. Do not assume that a retaining ring, gasket, clip or other part from the old insert will suit the replacement. Confirm the intended fit with the supplied components; do not force an uncertain assembly into place.
4. Keep model identity separate from appearance
Two inserts can have similar front styling without sharing the same mounting requirements. Conversely, different front sizes may use related rear structures. Neither possibility establishes interchangeability. Use the supplier's model identifier and drawing revision to keep the component and housing specifications connected.

5. Approve a sample before releasing the housing for production
Test the selected sample in a representative finished housing. Check that the bezel sits as intended, the insert is retained correctly and the rear components have the required clearance. Confirm that the clock can be set and the battery accessed using the planned service procedure.
Record the exact sample identity, drawing revision and housing measurements. Where fit requirements are important, agree measurable acceptance criteria with the supplier. Avoid copying a tolerance from a different model or applying one number to every dimension.
Keep an approved sample and the corresponding records for later orders. If the housing process, finish or insert option changes, review the fit again before treating the previous approval as applicable.
