How do you choose a movement for long clock hands?

Choose a high torque clock movement by checking the complete hand configuration, not just the dial diameter or the words on a product listing. Record the hand length, finished weight, fitting and balance, then ask the supplier to confirm the combination for the exact movement version. Check the mounting and clearances in an assembled sample before ordering in quantity.

This guide is for clock manufacturers, large-clock sellers and DIY buyers preparing a specification. It uses Heng-Rong's August 12, 2026 technical knowledge base for HR1688DL reference data. Those records describe a particular model and evaluation conditions; they do not establish compatibility for every hand design or every product in the high torque category.

1. Keep hand length separate from dial size

A large dial does not tell a supplier the dimensions of the moving parts. Send a drawing of the actual hour and minute hands, including any tail behind the fitting. Mark the distance from the centre of the fitting to the tip, the overall length and the tail length separately. Use units and reference points rather than an approximate size description.

This distinction matters when comparing a hand drawing with a supplier's stated limit. A length may refer to the centre-to-tip distance or to the complete component. If a specification does not define the measurement, ask for clarification before using it to approve a design. Do not convert a hand-length figure directly into a guaranteed maximum dial diameter.

2. Record finished weight and its distribution

Weigh the finished hand in the form that will be installed. Identify whether the recorded weight includes the fitting, decorative additions and any counterweight. Two hands with similar outlines may differ in material, thickness or construction, so appearance alone is not enough to define the load.

Also show where material lies relative to the fitting. The role of balance is to reduce the uneven gravitational load of a hand on a vertical clock. A tail or counterweight changes that balance, but also adds mass. Adding weight without reviewing the complete design is not a universal solution to a movement that struggles with a hand.

Heng-Rong's HR1688DL technical note calls for hands that are approximately balanced on both sides, with weight added at the tail as needed. Treat this as a condition to discuss with the supplier. Request a suitable hand design or an approved balancing method instead of attaching an improvised weight and assuming the published limits still apply.

3. Read HR1688DL reference data with its conditions

The following information is recorded in the August 12, 2026 supplementary knowledge base, entries PT-03 and PT-04. Confirm the currently quoted version and its drawing before purchase.

Item Recorded information Buyer clarification
Model HR1688DL Confirm the exact version supplied
Minute-hand output torque At least 30 gf-cm at 1.5 V Do not apply this to other models
Second-hand output torque At least 1.5 gf-cm at 1.5 V Separate from the minute-hand value
Hand limits in the minute-hand entry Length up to 450 mm; weight up to 10 g Confirm measurement points and whether the counterweight is included
Power and orientation AA battery, 1.5 V; battery compartment facing down Use the specified assembly orientation
Hand condition Approximately balanced on both sides Review the actual hand configuration

The source does not define the reference points for the 450 mm measurement or resolve every detail of the 10 g weight entry. Do not treat these numbers as unconditional approval for a hand at both limits. Provide the drawing and weight breakdown and obtain confirmation for the actual combination.

4. Understand what the recorded check establishes

The knowledge base describes fitting approximately balanced hands, installing the battery and observing operation for 24 hours. It describes correct timekeeping as the pass condition. However, it does not provide a numerical accuracy tolerance, detailed torque measurement procedure or a standalone test report for this article.

Accordingly, this guide does not turn that description into a certified accuracy claim, a lifetime estimate or a guarantee for every operating environment. If your purchase requires a measurable acceptance limit, agree the test method, conditions and pass criteria with the supplier. Keep the results linked to the tested movement version and hand set.

5. Check fitting and clearance independently

A higher output torque does not establish the correct hand interface or mounting dimensions. Confirm the hand fitting for the exact movement, the usable mounting thread and the hardware required for your dial. Do not assume a hand set from another movement will fit simply because its length and weight seem suitable.

Check space between the hands, the dial and any front cover throughout the intended travel. Review the assembled clock in its operating position, using the intended housing and fixing method. Contact between parts is an assembly issue that should be corrected; selecting a more powerful movement is not a substitute for confirming clearance.

6. Send a complete specification for review

When requesting a quotation, include the movement reference, hand drawings and finished weights. Add photographs of the fittings, the dial thickness, available rear space and any front cover. State whether a second hand is required and identify any specific sound or timekeeping requirement separately.

Ask the supplier to identify the configuration covered by its recommendation. Keep an approved sample with the corresponding drawing revisions and evaluation notes. If the hand material, thickness, fitting or counterweight changes, review the affected checks again before applying the previous approval to production.

Frequently asked questions

Does high torque mean silent operation?

No. Do not infer a sound characteristic from a torque description. Confirm the movement's operating type and any sound requirement separately for the version being quoted.

Can I use the 450 mm figure for any clock hand?

No. It is a dated HR1688DL reference with balancing conditions and an undefined length measurement convention. Confirm the actual drawing, finished weight and fit before treating a proposed hand as suitable.

Does a successful 24-hour sample check prove service life?

No. It records the result of that observation under its stated conditions. Any endurance or service-life claim needs separate supporting evidence and an agreed basis.

Discuss your hand configuration

Browse the high torque clock movement range to identify a candidate, then send the actual hand and mounting details through the Heng-Rong contact page. Ask for model-specific confirmation, current sample terms and a quotation. The reference data here is a starting point for engineering review, not a stock, price or delivery promise.
